You have spent a long time building up a successful business, but at some stage it will be time to move on.

Selling a business is not something to be taken lightly and unlike selling a house or a car, it can be a once in a lifetime experience.

Early and effective preparation is one of the keys to a successful sale.

It is important to have a strong understanding of your businesses' strengths and weaknesses. This is the time to honestly evaluate what your business does well, and what will be seen as areas that new owners will need to improve.

It is a good idea to have somebody independent to help you with this as they will be less emotionally invested in the business and can challenge your thinking.

• The need to provide at least three years, of historical financial information. This information will be heavily reviewed and scrutinised by a buyer and their advisers so providing credible information up front will avoid any unforeseen questions throughout the process.
• The need to thoroughly document job descriptions, key contracts and organisation processes. Likewise a buyer will want to know that day-to-day processes are documented.
• How reliant your business is on you.
• Have you got a pool of capable key staff that can step up to the plate and run the business without you?
• Will it be necessary and are you willing to keep working in the business for a period of time after the sale to help ensure a smooth transition.
